Alexandria - A must see City while visiting Egypt

Alexandria is the second-largest Egyptian city in size. It was founded by Alexander the Great in 332 BC and in its appearance has more Mediterranean, rather than oriental features. It is one of the few Egyptian resorts on the Mediterranean coast, with the city stretching 20 kilometers wide of the coastal strip. Alexandria is 225 kilometers from Cairo.

For many years Alexandria was the largest trading center of Egypt and the center of its culture. The famous Library of Alexandria was built here, the collection of which numbered about a million volumes. Another significant structure of the city was the Pharos Lighthouse, which could not withstand the strongest earthquake in the 14th century. With the heyday of Cairo, the majestic Alexandria lost its meaning, but in the 19th century with the rise of Muhammad Ali, the city experienced a rebirth.

On the site of the Pharos Lighthouse, today is the Citadel of Quitbay, erected by Sultan Ashraf over the eastern harbor in the 15th century. It is a Muslim fortress with round towers equipped with loopholes looking towards the sea. The other shore of the harbor is decorated with rock tombs of Anfushi, the color of the walls of which imitates marble slabs, wood array, and alabaster.

The most popular mosque in Alexandria, built in the 18th century, is noteworthy. This is the Abu el-Abbas Mosque with four domes and a minaret, which is 73 meters high. It is recognized as a masterpiece of Muslim construction art due to its unusual ornament and facade decoration. The mosque was built on the site of the tomb of Abu el-Abbas el-Mursi.

An impressive collection of coins is presented in the Greco-Roman Museum of Alexandria. There are also sarcophagi, statues, figures made of wood and marble, papyrus and all sorts of clay vessels. All these exhibits tell the story of ancient Egypt of different eras. In one of the halls even exhibited mummy crocodiles, and the total number of exhibits exceeds 40,000.

Near Quitbay Citadel is the building of the Hydrobiological Museum. It has 50 aquariums with representatives of marine and river fauna (colored fish, corals, and mollusks) that were caught in the waters of the Nile, as well as the Mediterranean and Red Sea. The most famous landmark of the Hydrobiological Museum of Alexandria is the 17-meter skeleton of a whale. This whale was washed up on the east coast near Alexandria in 1936.

A visit to Alexandria is not complete without a view of the winding embankment that stretches from the east bay to the city center. For recreation and swimming, tourists prefer the famous beaches of Montaza and Maamura. You can also go on a tour to the nearby town of Abu Kir, where two centuries ago fought squadrons of Nelson and Napoleon.
